Emotional Stories from Survivors of the Dachau

Dachau Concentration Camp Overview

As the Nazis gained political power in Germany during the early 1930s, they persecuted designated enemies nationwide. The Dachau concentration camp officially opened in the spring of 1933 for the sole purpose of holding political opponents. Located in Upper Bavaria, this facility expanded into one of the largest of its kind during World War II. Innocent Jews were imprisoned at this enormous complex until the end of WWII. Romani, Poles, religious figures, and other targeted groups were also forced into this concentration camp in the southern part of Germany. By the time the concentration camp was liberated in the spring of 1945, more than 180,000 victims died at the hands of the Nazis. Some Dachau survivors moved to Israel and the United States of America after the war. These resilient victims have shared their amazing stories with the rest of the world through interviews and other publications in multiple languages.
