Learning from History: Why We Must Remember the Victims of The Holocaust.
Thinking about horrible events like the holocaust isn’t something people want to do, but the victims must be honored and remembered as the cost of not doing so is so great.
The Holocaust reminds us about the terror people are capable of. The following are a few reasons why thoughtful reflection on these events is so important and valuable to todays society.
Fighting Hatred
Holocaust Remembrance means fighting hate. When hate is allowed to fester unchecked, horrible things can happen in otherwise peaceful societies. Unchallenged hate is capable of turning people into monsters. It’s capable of dehumanizing people and much worse. When dark times are remembered and worked through by thoughtful people in self-reflective societies, it helps curve hate before it gets out of control. This might even change dark, hate-filled hearts to loving compassionate ones, it happens every day.
To Honor
These victims of hate must be honored continually. It’s the duty of every person to pay their respects to the lives that were lost for no reason. How one does this depends on personal preference. For example, some people donate to Holocaust survivor charities others offer up prayers within their homes and communities.
Enrichment
The legacies left behind can inspire others to do more today. They can be more inclusive, show more love, and make changes that will protect marginalized groups of people. That’s something the Holocaust can do today and has done since its foundation. While the inspiration comes from something that no one wants to think about, it’s value in helping to increase the quality of life of our descendants by stemming hateful violent rhetoric and cultivating compassion and understanding within our society is of paramount importance.
