Why it is Important to Teach People Everywhere About the Holocaust

If you are a teacher, parent, religious leader or some other type of person considering teaching others about the Holocaust, please do. There are many reasons for everyone to learn about the Holocaust, and a Holocaust remembrance
curriculum can definitely help educators.

Reasons to Teach the Holocaust

The Holocaust is an example of a government using the institutions of the state to commit genocide. Unfortunately, this has happened since, but it is less likely to happen again if people everywhere learn about what happened in Europe. Essentially, educating people about the past is a way to help prevent history from repeating itself.

Learning about what lead up to the Holocaust is a reminder to young people that even small actions of discrimination against a group of people can eventually bring horrible consequences. If a young person knows about the Holocaust, they are more likely to be involved civically in their own communities.

Learning about the Holocaust honors the victims of Nazi Germany by keeping their memories alive. While it is too late to erase the injustice of the Holocaust, it is never too late to teach about it and to ensure that people today know what happened. When the Holocaust is taught as something that could have been prevented rather than something that was inevitable, children learn that similar genocides don’t have to happen again.
